Suzhou is 30 minutes from Shanghai by high-speed train and most visitors still manage to spend the whole day at two gardens and a tourist street. We do it differently: one garden (the right one), a canal neighborhood that locals actually live in, and lunch somewhere that doesn’t have an English menu.
